Most of the time, winter doesn’t bother us that much down in the Southeast, which probably explains why there are so many Yankees living among us. While we do occasionally get a bit of snow, it’s nothing like the piles of white stuff they get up north. While it can be an inconvenience, I know some of us get a little “snow envy”, longing for a beautiful crystal-white landscape and the fun activities that go with it.
Well, no worries, because you don’t have to leave the southeast to experience walking (and playing!) in a winter wonderland. All you have to do is visit Stone Mountain Park in Georgia, where snow is always in the winter weather forecast.
From now through February 22, Stone Mountain Park, Georgia’s most visited attraction, will be presenting “Snow Mountain”, 5 football fields of real snow for visitors to frolic in, whether it’s tubing down a 400 foot hill, building a snowman or shooting snowballs. Tubing is always a big hit, and you can slide down by yourself or with a group in one of their family-sized tubes. There’s also a tubing area called Little Angels just for kids three and under.
After a day of playing in the snow, what can be better than toasting some marshmallows and s’mores by a roaring bonfire? You can also chill out (and warm up!) at the SnoDeck, where you can buy some hot and cold refreshments.
Of course, you can’t have a winter wonderland in December without some Christmas festivities! Visit with favorite characters like Rudolph and Bumble, the Abominable Snowman, enjoy live performances, board the Sing-Along Train and stroll through over 2 million lights. New for 2014, experience “Ice Age: A Mammoth Christmas 4-D”, featured in 3-D with added in-theater effects that will transport you back to the Ice Age.
Aside from Snow Mountain’s frosty adventures, Stone Mountain Park offers many other exhibits and activities such as The Great Barn, an indoor mega-playground featuring super slides, trampoline floors, climbing structures and over 65 interactive games. And don’t miss The Summit Skyride, a high-speed cable car that will lift you more than 825 feet above ground to the top of Stone Mountain. From the top, experience amazing views of the Atlanta skyline, the Appalachian Mountains and more up to 60 miles away.
